At Kates Hill, children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing and playing instruments. Children have the opportunity to evaluate, analyse, and compose across a variety of musical genres. We are committed to developing a curiosity for music, as well as an understanding of the importance of all types of music. We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music. Our children will be taught music in a way that ensures a progression of skills and follows a sequence to build on previous learning. In addition to this, we intend to give each child the opportunity to learn an instrument during their time with us.

At Kates Hill, the music curriculum is designed to be inclusive, progressive and engaging. Music is embedded in both classroom practice and wider school life. This includes weekly singing assemblies, performances and celebrations throughout the year. Using the Charanga scheme, music is taught through carefully sequenced lessons that revisit and build upon prior knowledge. This ensures children develop a secure understanding of key musical concepts over time. All children are given the opportunity to learn the recorder and violin. Children learn the core elements of music and apply these in their own compositions.

Lessons incorporate music from a variety of cultures and historical contexts, supporting diversity and a rich musical vocabulary. Through regular opportunities to create and perform music, pupils not only deepen their musical understanding but also gain confidence, creativity and enjoyment. Cross-curricular links, such as using music to reinforce learning in Maths and History, further enhance pupils’ engagement and retention of knowledge.
